The first half of the opening stage of the Historic Rally Fafe, the first round of the FIA European Historic Rally Championship on gravel, was highly competitive, featuring three different winners and the lead held by Belgian Christophe Jacob (Ford Escort RS 1800) since the second timed section.
Daniel Alonso Villaron (Ford Escort RS 2000) proved to be the fastest in the opening stage, ahead of the Escorts of Jesus Ferreiro Perez and Christophe Jacob, but mechanical problems in the following two "specials" caused him to lose significant time and drop to the final positions. Perez, the reigning European champion in Category 3, was consistently among the frontrunners, but in Aboim/Luilhas he was eventually ousted from second place by Sammarinese Nemo Mazza (Ford Escort RS). Less than 8 seconds separate these two, with Australian Darryn Snooks rounding out a "top 5" dominated by Ford Escorts.
Austrian Kris Rosenberger (Subaru Impreza Turbo GT), who had been the fastest in the Shakedown, was the first to retire following problems experienced in the opening stage.
In the afternoon, the drivers return to the road for the final pass through the same special stages: Santa Quitéria, S. Pedro, and Aboim/Luílhas.
